A new paper in the PLOS ONE journal found that raising your cholesterol by lowering your intake of saturated fat, adding a few grams of healthy fats like flaxseed oil and avocado oil, and eating fewer refined carbs is the key to lowering your cholesterol.
The findings of the study were based on data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and a global survey of more than 8,000 adults, aged between 18 and 80.
The results of the analysis were then compared to a group of individuals who had never raised their cholesterol.
The people in the study who had raised their LDL cholesterol were at an increased risk of having a heart attack or stroke compared to the individuals who did not.
A high-fat dietThe study found that individuals who lowered their intake of fat by 5 to 10 percent, while eating less processed carbohydrates and refined carbs were at a significantly increased risk for having a stroke compared with those who ate no less than the recommended intake.
The study also found that lowering your LDL cholesterol by 2 to 4 percent was the best way to raise HDL cholesterol, which is associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
“These results show that there are effective and effective strategies for lowering cholesterol, particularly among the elderly, to which we should all adhere,” the study’s lead author, Dr Gopal Pandey, a professor of epidemiology at the University of California, San Francisco, said in a statement.
“Our results provide an important window into how important lowering LDL cholesterol is to lowering the risk of heart disease, stroke and cardiovascular mortality,” he added.
According to the report, the number of people with LDL cholesterol levels of between 190 and 260 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) rose by nearly two thirds in the first decade after the global obesity pandemic began in the 1990s.
According to the study, the risk for a person to have a heart event rose by almost two-thirds in the same time period.
The average person in the UK has a cholesterol level of between 180 and 220 mg/dL, while the U.S. has a daily average cholesterol level between 300 and 400 mg/dl.
According the study authors, raising your LDL to a healthy level by reducing your consumption of saturated fats, including butter, and by increasing your intake, including healthy fruits and vegetables, will help to lower your cholesterol level.
